Climbing Team Update

Saturday, January 15, our Comp. Climbing Team traveled to Reno, NV for the ABS Regional Competition. I am so proud of Spencer, Darcy, Laine, Suraya (unfortunately Sarah could not make the comp, so she supported the team from home), and Coach Andrew! They represented our community well on the big stage.  And *drum roll please* Darcy has earned a bid to Nationals in Colorado!

Andrew said he was very proud of our team in ways that podiums do not recognize. He mentioned Spencer’s maturity in reaching out to other teams, ignoring imaginary lines that adults seem to trip over. Also, he watched as Laine and Suraya bonded like sisters to become true teammates.

I love our gym’s community, and I see a clear snapshot of who we strive to be in our climbing team. We climb hard and reach out to people.

Looking for a way to support our team? We will be raffling a bike this month in the Rock Club to raise funds for our Climbing Team. The tickets will be $5 each or $20 for five tickets.

Get In Out of the Rain

Last time I checked, rain is in the cards for us 8 out of the next 10 days. I love the rain for a few reasons, but I don’t enjoy being stuck in my house because it’s so gloomy outside. Indoor rock climbing is a great activity when the rain is pouring.  Have you been? If you’re looking for something indoors, fun and exciting, then check out a Day Pass ($15 for adults & $13 for kids). You can climb our automatic ropes as many times as you like. (We just ask that every participant has a completed liability waiver and closed-toed shoes.)

If you are an experienced rock climber, then you know, “‘tis the season to be training.”  With the wet out there, you’re going to wait months for your projects to fully dry. There is no better time to head indoors and hone your craft. If you haven’t yet, check us out. I think you’ll find a great community here.

Halloween Member Night

Thursday, October 28th was a spectacular night for our gym. Over a hundred of our members—many dressed in silly costumes—braved the dark to climb with headlamps. It was terrific fun to leave life’s worries at home and hang out with burglars, ninjas and yes, even Cinderella. I love our gym’s community. We are responsible climbers who are not afraid to let loose and be silly. We push each other, spot each other, and laugh together throughout.

One of my highlights, other than the Giants win, had to do with the dyno competition. A member told me of her fear of dynos. She had never attempted one and was afraid of embarrassing herself in front of her peers. An hour later, I witnessed her fly through the air and snag a hold far above her head. Her friends screamed to cheer her on and the look on her face as she touched the ground reminded me what I love most about our sport.

Thank you to all our members who attended the Halloween Member Appreciation Night. It was a night I will remember. Also, thank you to Dan, Andrew, Shannon, and Stephanie for your hard work in making the night possible.

Success & Gratitude

Our ABS 12 competition was a huge success! Thanks to our Head Route Setter, Charlie Padilla, and his crew, we put up 73 new boulder problems! Those routes were sessioned by over 100 competitors Saturday, September 25. Many great compliments were offered to our gym; we all have a lot to be proud of.

Our team placed very well in the competition. Our coaching staff celebrated our team’s strong showing at the season’s first competition. Several team members placed well in their divisions; this is shaping up to be a great ABS season!

I am also very grateful to Evolv for sending us a comp box to raffle of to the competitors. Despite our current economy, Evolv has not given up supporting good causes. Thank you Evolv! Your shoe gift certificate and chalk bags were appreciated by the young climbers of Northern California.

ABS is coming

Our gym is hosting the American Bouldering Series (ABS 12) opener at the end of this month,on the 25th.  Why do we choose to be a part of this scene? Well, Monday through Thursday afternoon our City Beach Climbing Team works their tails off for hours upon hours preparing for events such as these. Let’s face it, rock climbing, by nature, is more of an individual than a team sport, but USA Climbing is working hard to bring everybody together. I gained invaluable life experience from the team sports I played in my youth, and I also have learned from rock climbing as an adult. Therefore, I am proud that our gym hosts competitions that successfully combine team dynamics with the sport I love so much. There are 100+ kids that have been working hard all year to prepare for this, and their hard work deserves a flawless comp. It is easy to hide behind the perk of 70 new problems to show for our members after a bouldering comp; however, there is more to it than that. City Beach is proud to host this competition because of the kids that have been training, the parents that facilitate their kids’ passions, the volunteers that work so hard for USA Climbing, the concept of teamwork within indoor climbing, and our City Beach Climbing Team! If you are free Saturday, the 25th, then stop by the gym to cheer on your team. I promise you will be blown away by their achievements.

Little Victories

I am happy to announce that we have a new website! In fact, if you are reading this blog, then you are looking at the new site. I encourage all of you to browse through the site, check out the video that Lauren, one of our members, made, and follow our upcoming events. We can post our calendars much easier now, and competitions will be up further in advance. Speaking of competitions, we have one coming up in September. It is a bouldering comp, so we will have to shut down both the free standing boulder and the cave for about a week, but after that week, we will have 70 new problems for you. Our member night in August was a success! Thank you to all our members that came out for that, and thank you to our new Executive Chef, Keith, for his wonderful food at our event!

Check Out One Of Our Members Lastest Vids

Things like this just let us know our gym is doing everything for all the right reasons. Climbing is really an excuse to push yourself and meet great people.  Take a look at the video one of our members made about their experience at our gym. Our Climbing Team

When I was about 5 or 6 years old I played in a YMCA basketball league. It was my first experience being on a basketball team, and I had a lot to learn. By the time the last game of the season rolled around, I had yet to even take a shot. I closed my eyes and chucked a prayer at the basket only to realize that I had shot at the wrong hoop (good thing it was an airball). After the game the strangest thing happened. My dad took me out for ice cream because he was proud of me. I did not understand why my dad was proud of a son that threw the ball at the wrong basket, but he explained to me that progress is success.

We should all be proud of the City Beach Climbing Team. Last year they were able to send two children to Nationals and this year as the team has regrouped we are confident that they will be sending more.  Join our blog and follow our team during the next ABS season!  We always believe that you should be proud of the journey and not always the accomplishments!
