ABS is coming

Our gym is hosting the American Bouldering Series (ABS 12) opener at the end of this month,on the 25th.  Why do we choose to be a part of this scene? Well, Monday through Thursday afternoon our City Beach Climbing Team works their tails off for hours upon hours preparing for events such as these. Let’s face it, rock climbing, by nature, is more of an individual than a team sport, but USA Climbing is working hard to bring everybody together. I gained invaluable life experience from the team sports I played in my youth, and I also have learned from rock climbing as an adult. Therefore, I am proud that our gym hosts competitions that successfully combine team dynamics with the sport I love so much. There are 100+ kids that have been working hard all year to prepare for this, and their hard work deserves a flawless comp. It is easy to hide behind the perk of 70 new problems to show for our members after a bouldering comp; however, there is more to it than that. City Beach is proud to host this competition because of the kids that have been training, the parents that facilitate their kids’ passions, the volunteers that work so hard for USA Climbing, the concept of teamwork within indoor climbing, and our City Beach Climbing Team! If you are free Saturday, the 25th, then stop by the gym to cheer on your team. I promise you will be blown away by their achievements.

Congratulations

Big congratulations go out to our Jr. Climbing Squad and their coach Andrew De Torres.  Several members of our squad competed in this year’s SCS Regional Qualifier and we are happy to announce we won several bids to Nationals.  So if you see the team please congratulate them and special congratulations go out to Sara, Revin, Spencer, and Seth.  We expect big things from you guys.

Another Member Night

It’s time for another Member’s Night! The 29th of this month (the last Thursday) we will be hosting another Member Appreciation Night. That’s right. Bring a friend, come hungry, and leave happy. We will be opening our ropes course again, so find a partner to experience the elements with. The food will arrive around 7pm, and the party will be rockin’ until 10pm. If you stopped by during Spring Break, then you saw the crowds with their book bucks. I saw something on Friday that made me appreciate our community. Three of our members were in for their usual session, and having an odd number, they decided to each take turns belaying for the general public to ease some of the lines and please our guests. Nobody asked them to do this, they just knew it would be a nice thing to do. That is why I climb here, and that is why we throw a party every other month. We appreciate you guys! You are the best asset that our gym has, and it is because of you that our gym is growing. Thursday, April 29th.

Be there!

Can’t Quite Explain

I was climbing with some friends this week, and something was not right. No, it wasn’t that I was wearing an unwashed shirt, or that my toes had gone numb from my shoes, it was more or less unexplainable.  I was planning on climbing all day,  working on my project, but when the time came to pull myself off the ground I felt heavy.  Perhaps the double quarter pounder with cheese was the culprit, but whatever it was it was  messing with my day. For years climbing has been therapy. I leave my distractions and simply focus on making the next move, but the heavy feeling didn’t leave after my warm-up, so I shrugged my shoulders and decided to go for an endurance day. A couple hours later I was pumped. I did not send a new project, yet I felt accomplished. Maybe it was the positive attitudes of the people around me, or the burning  sensation deep in my forearms. Either way, I was stronger. Let’s face it, the mental side of climbing is more daunting than the physical side sometimes. I did not give up after my warm-up. Instead, I kept my shoes on and I am stronger for it.

Members Night & SCS Comp

Thanks for a great Member Night last Thursday! The outfits were great, the music, the ropes course…you guys are awesome. Next Saturday we are hosting a youth SCS (sport climbing series) comp. It is a rope climbing competition, so we will be closing certain sections of walls in order to set new routes for the comp. The good news there is that we will have 35 new top-rope and lead routes open to you guys on Monday, March 15th. The comp will be a lot of fun, and anyone that wants to come in and watch or volunteer is welcome to do so.

Winter Camps

City Beach is once again launching our Winter Camp program for young climbers.  The camps are a week-long and allow novice climbers to develop their skills and muscle cordination.  However, our camps are not just for climbers we welcome all ages and abilities to join our winter camps.  Our camps offer rock climbing, team building games for youth, entertainment activities, a “healthy snack”, and instruction from our veteran camp counselors.  So if your looking for a place for your child to displace some energy during their break from school our camps is the place to bring them.
